Facebook vs. Gmail: Round 1

Facebook announced this week that they will be extending the sites email function.  They will allow people to send emails to anybody instead of just Facebook members.  Google and Facebook are currently battling for ad revenue and this announcement created more competition.  Duffka loves the competition aspect and is looking for reader input on the Facebook vs. Google showdown.  Facebook has 500 million subscribers so far and growing.  Here is link to the FB announcement.

Who is going to win this battle?  For the readers that have Gmail and Facebook, which do you think you will prefer?

  1. I think Facebook will for sure end up more popular than Gmail. It would be very convienant because so many people have Facebook. Now that you can email everyone and not just facebook friends I believe their are going to be a lot more people with a facebook email account.

  2. I think that Facebook will win the battle. Previously, email was the only thing Facebook couldn't do. However, now that they are enabling this feature, i think it is going to make google mail completely unnecessary.

  3. Facebook will win by a land slide. Facebook is so popular and only getting more popular with all of its updates that people will take advantage this new feature and embrace it. Plus now everyone has a facebook, even senior citizens are seen more often than not using a facebook. So why not just be able to do everything from one site. Facebook will provide this, and win.

  4. Facebook will probably "win", since it has more functions than gmail. It will allow Facebook to appeal more to older users who initially viewed the site as a social network for teens. I will still probably use gmail for emailing, as I prefer to use Facebook for personal use and gmail for school.

  5. I think that Facebook will most likely win the battle due to the fact that they have more subscribers than Google. I think that readers would prefer Gmail because they have all of their preferences set up, like gmail, google docs, google calendar, etc. If Facebook offers more than Google in terms of email functions, Facebook will lead the email market.

  6. Personally I don't really like gmail. When I use it on my computer or on my iPad I get confused and generally only use it through my phone's email function when I need to. I like Facebook more because its simpler and I use it a lot more than gmail.

  7. Facebook is definatly favored than gmail because every body has a facebook and only some have gmail. Facebook is just making things easier for facebook users. It's not like gmail users who don't have a facebook is going get a facebook now. Gmail shouldn't panic because gmail is one of googles many features.

  8. With facebook coming out with an email function, I think it will surpass gmail in the younger geaneration. Since most college students and high school students check their Facebook daily, I think they are more likely to use email through facebook than gmail. Most people my age do not check their email daily and it makes it harder for them to receive mail from others. So I think the younger generation will all switch to facebook while the older generation will stick with gamil because less of themuse facebook.

  9. I think facebook will win because so many people have facebook. It will be good for teens and the younger generation because we all have one and check it daily where as, the older generations, facebook will not be such a big hit.

  10. I agree with Pacelli that Facebook will probably beat out google for the use of email. I still think that large businesses will still use google and gmail as it is geared more towards professional businesses where Facebook has the perception of being for teens.

  11. I think faceboook will win. Facebook is one of the most popular sites in the world. It can pretty much do anything it wants because it is a global website. Facebook is used by kids, teens and adults of all ages. I have not heard of gmail until we made an account for Econ.

  12. Facebook will likely win this battle. Google won't suffer a lot from this but I believe that if Facebook wamts something, they can get it. Facebook seems to continue to develop and improve and expand it's functions; hopefully they won't go too far and make more enemies.

  13. I think both are still going to be successful. Facebook has the majority of the teenage and college market groups, and gmail or email in general is more adult and business oriented. Facebook is just expanding their capabilities. I don't think gmail has anything to worry about, especially because google is going to take over the world in the near future.

  14. They should merge and create a megasite that will take over the Internet, where people can go on fb and check their email, two things people do compulsively, and they can make big bucks from ads. Also, google will win but their losses will be great, fb mail seems like it would be inconvenient or confusing.

  15. i believe that facebook will win because then people will only need to communicte through one website. it is more convenient, anf since facebook is on the rise, people will find it easier to just use facebook. some may argue that facebook is not for business, but you probably dont have to be "friends" with the people you want to email. also, you can make your page private.

facebook also can connect to mobile phones, therefore people can sync their phone contacts informatiom with email information.

  16. I think both are going to win, but in different ways. I don't think Facebook and gmail should merge because they are two entirely different types of websites. Facebook is for communicating with others through a social aspect and less formal way, with pictures and blogs. Whereas, gmail is more formal type of communication, with just text and little pictures and other media types. Gmail is more for business and facebook is more for pleasure. So, a facebook email would be inconvenient and not worth while because there are already tons of email companies.

  17. I think that Facebook will win this battle due to it's growing popularity, however as a Facebook user myself, I will not utilize this new email feature. I think that to some people it will create one mega site where they can do multiple tasks on just one site. While this is convenient, it is not appealing to me. I do not like the idea of combining my social networking site with my email which I use for school and work. I do not like the idea of combining my social life with my professional one.

  18. The only reason I think Facebook will win is battle is because of the large amount of users which is still growing. I would not like to use a Facebook email because if I need to email someone the last thing I want is to notifications that will distract me. Google is just better known it being a search engine. Gmail will continue to be successful and in the long run will be the favorite choice over Facebook email.

  19. I think both will succeed, much like yahoo has continued to do. Neither Facebook nor gmail will be able to dominate as long as other free email services exist because each will offer alternate benefits the others cannot, like gmail's easy compatibility with google calendar, gmail, and it's new offer to make phone calls via the Internet while Facebook offers easy compatibility with its widely used social networking, games, event calendar, and many other apps.

  20. I think facebook will win because it will be more convenient for the users of email to use the facebook email because they dont have to use the different websites.

  21. I think that Facebook will most likely win due to the fact that they have so many subscribers. You cant really give one an edge of the other on the fact that one is more globally known than the other because as soon as u say either Facebook or google, people automatically know what you're talking about. I would probably prefer Facebook though.

  22. I think that facebook will win, because it is something that almost everybody uses every day. With people checking their facebook constantly, they will also be able to check their email without having to go to a different website. Although facebook email is a bit complicated right now, I'm sure they will make it easier and it will become a popular site for emailing.

  23. Both will keep going strong until Facebook comes out with more capabilities such as google docs and maps and other things, once Facebook branches out a little farther, they will totally take over the market.

  24. I think both would win. Google is a personal hub with little gadgets in addition to email. Facebook is about connecting to friends. They sorta have different appeals. However there will be some competition merely because they are Internet giants with huge member pools. I think google would win they have a lot more power with phones and computers

  25. I think that this is a good idea because we check our Facebook more than emails. However, I think it is unnecessary. It gives encouragement to people who don't want a Facebook not to make one because they can still get in contact with people who have them. For orchesis, MC sends us messages through an orchesis group so that way we don't have to check our email and are still in communication; none of us are friends with her on Facebook but the messaging helps us communicate. I ink it will discourage some from making a facebook and thus decrease ad revenue.

  26. I think that Facebook will take over the email, but it will take a while. Gmail is the best right now but the popularity of Facebook will ultimately win out. As long as Facebooks email security is adequate then it won't be much of a competition.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I believe facebook will win the competition because they have much more followers of a younger generation and as that generation grows, facebook will gain more followers while google will lose followers since google doesn't have individual profiles and the other personalized and custom options that facebook has.

  28. I think that Facebook will probably win, because many people rely on it for their social needs. Therefore, since Facebook relies on 500 million users then there's a possibility that if Facebook integrates email then it will win. However, I myself will still continue using Gmail for emails because I consider that more professional than Facebook, and I mostly use Gmail for school.

  29. I feel like google will win, because email is more of a profession medium of communicating than facebook, so it would probably seem unprofessional to submit college or employment applications with facebook emails, or send business emails within a company using a Facebook email. I personally would stick with google and yahoo for email, because i feel like they are totally separate mediums of communication. When i use facebook, I'm being more social, and when i use email I'm communicating with more mature messages to relatives, teachers, or anything else that would seem unprofessional/rude when sent from a facebook email.

  30. I think facebook will win because of the amount of people who already use their site. They want convenience, and with Facebook email, everything would be available in one place. It would take a lot longer to go into another site, and it would be a hassle to remember all the passwords and login names for multiple sites. Facebook will win because of the amount of people that already have accounts on their site

  31. I think that many new users will choose facebook because they already have one, but those who already have an email account probably won't switch because they are already comfortable with it.

  32. I think facebook will probably win, because many people rely on their facebooks and they check it more often then they do their gmail accounts. I think gmail though, is more professional to use to communicate with others.

  33. In my opinion, Facebook will end up with the bigger increase in subscribers. However, more people will also use google, not just because of the email feature, but because of all the productive and efficient tools that are available for anyone. Ultimatly, gmail will be used for businesses or more formal occasions, because it seems more professional, and Facebook for private matters.

  34. Gmail has been around for a lot longer as an email client then Facebook and they integrate all of their resources so well, it's going to be extremely difficult for Facebook to compete. Gmail is a quality free service that is good at what it goes. The only real advantage Facebook has is the amount of time their client base spends on the website.

  35. I think that facebook will become more popular for kids but regular email will still have more users for a long time because it has been around longer.
