Black Thanksgiving to Increase Total Revenue or Profit Maximization?

This year MORE retailers like Sears and Old Navy will be open on Thanksgiving.  Traditionally, Thanksgiving Day consumers assume stores are closed then open around 6 AM the next day with large bargains on a few popular items.  According to the National Retail Federation sales are expected to rise 2.3% this year which is a few basis points less than the historical average.  Sears (owned by Kmart) is desperate for a sales increase this year after reporting an even larger loss last quarter.  Duffka is curious...who is going to Sears on Thanksgiving?  Gap, which owns Old Navy and Banana Republic, expects most of their stores to be open.  Last year 18 million people shopped on Thanksgiving.  Most of them were 18-34 years old.  Kohl's has decided to stay closed on Thanksgiving so its customers and associates (employees) "can spend time with family."  I'm willing to bet that Kohl's will have a sale every weekend for the rest of their existence.  Duffka only shops at Kohl's when there are no sales.  Any thoughts on the new Black Thanksgiving?

  1. I do not shop at Sears because it's dirty and mostly poor people shop there, so I will not be attending the Sear Thanksgiving sale. For lower-class citizens I think that the Thanksgiving sale is a good idea because poor people can always use another opportunity to save money. Even though most people are at home getting fat with their families on Thanksgiving Day, I'm sure a few hardcore shoppers will go to Sears

  2. I'd don't know who would even want to shop on Thanksgiving. It's a holiday. Also, I don't think companies will increase sales by staying open one more day. Although the sales on Thanksigiving will increase, the sales the next day will decrease because most people won't shop at the same place two days in a row.

  3. I think that more and more people will be shopping on thanksgiving because of the increased demand to get holiday shopping done earlier. Because of this firms should try to profit by having the stores open for longer during the holidays.

  4. I think that people should spend time with their families, not go shopping we can always shop on Fridays.

  5. I think that it's wrong of stores to stay open on Thanksgiving just because they're trying to maximize profit. Families and employees deserve national holidays off. Traditionally the day after Thanksgiving is the big shopping day so to make it Thanksgiving itself just dumb.

  6. Well, the new black Friday allows more consumers to spend more. This will help out the economy a little bit by creating a higher velocity of money. I don't understand why people would spend time shopping instead of time with their family. It is just a way to have more people to spend money.

  7. I probably will not be shopping on Thanksgiving day. I usually spend that time with family and friends. I also dont think more people will shop on Thanksgiving unless the sales are very large Ora person isn't spending time with family. Also, duffer will never shop at kohl's because there is always sales there

  8. I will not be going to sears, but im sure more adults will go to sears because of the household electronics. I think it's dumb to stay open on thanksgiving because no one will go out shopping, and everyone needs to be with their families on that holiday.

  9. No ones gong to shop on thanksgiving for a sale if black Friday is right around the corner. Thankgiving is a relaxing day for most instead of a shopping day and since most stores are closed, people shouldn't bother finding an open one.

  10. I will be at home on Thanksgiving with my family. I think people who don't live near their families will take advantage of the sales on thanksgiving and some people only have lunch with their family and then go home so they can just go shopping after because they're already off of work. My family stays at my house forever so I won't be shopping that day. And with the economy people take advantage of every sale they can so I think it will help stores.

  11. I really don't like this idea. I find it shocking on how desperate these retail stores have become. To ask employees to work on thanksgiving is just sad. In my opinion I don't think this idea I'll work. Of course there are going to be tho crazy store crazy shoppers out shopping just to get a new tv 20% off, but as I recall most people enjoy eating turkey and being with their families on thanksgiving. The point of black friday is to get up early and go shopping the DAY AFTER thanksgiving. Sears can do what they need to do but i don't think it is going to have much of a positive impact on them. I for sure will not go shopping on thanksgiving, especially to kmart or sears. I wouldn't even go to sears on a normal day...

  12. I think that it is a good idea because it will give sears a lot more money which will give thwm more profit. Also, it will give people who do not celebrate thanksgiving somethimg to do. However, I really don' t like sears so I do not plan on going there.

  13. The thanksgiving day sale will have a minimal impact on the number of sales because won't want to go shopping. The highest rise in sales would still be the friday after thanksgiving.

  14. I don't expect too many people to shop on Thanksgiving. The stores probably won't make much money since they'll have less total revenue but still have to pay workers extra for working on a holiday. Stores should continue the Black Friday sales approach to maximize profits.

  15. I don't think stores should be open on Thanksgiving. Employees should have the day off to spend with family. I don't know why people would want to go shopping on Thanksgiving day, when they can just get up early Friday, and do their shopping then. Millions of people shop the day after Thanksgiving, so if your business still isn't making a big enough profit from that, they should close the store. Apparently no one like the store enough to spend their money there.

  16. I haven't been shopping on thanksgiving because I have no reason to. Saving a couple dollars but having to go on a holiday is not worth it. I know of some hardcore shoppers that do shop on thanksgiving but to keep stores open for those people seems inefficient. If people want to save money on clothing they should go on black Friday like everyone else.

  17. I personally will not be shopping on thanksgiving because I have football to play, turkey to eat, and naps to take. From my understanding these are the general things that people will be doing on thanksgiving, and as you can see, shopping is not on the list. Turkey day is a day to relax and spend time with your family, save the shopping for black friday.

  18. I think it's a waste of the store's resources and money. The amount of sales they acquire will be overshadowed by the double holiday pay they pay their staff.

  19. I think most people will not shop on thanksgiving because it is a holiday and time to spend time with family. I'm willing to guess that most companies open on thanksgiving will be increasing their variable costs because of paying more wages. Since most people will not shop on the holiday, I don't think the companies will make an economic profit because of rising variable costs and explicit costs.
    P.S. hi Kevin

  20. It's sweet. The retailers are going to be offering discounted items to attract buyers, and buyers are going to be attracted to retailers because they're going to be offering discounted items. The retailers will still be making money, but the buyers will feel like they're saving money because of the discounts they're receiving on the items they're buying. Everybody wins.

  21. I think it would be much better if the stores with more valuable things like electronics or more expensive clothing than the one from khol's , would put their stuff on sale. That would be the real "Thanks giving" to the people of all social classes because more people would be able to buy more expencive goods.

  22. Sears being open on Thanksgiving and having extreme sales would be a poor idea. It ruins the hype of Black Friday, and is breaking tradition. Also employees make time and a half on Thanksgiving, not on Black Friday

    ReplyDelete
  23. I would not shop on Thanksgiving because I am too lazy to get out of bed. I refuse to shop at Kohl's when there are sales because I think I'm cool and too good for Kohls. Remember, there is no free lunch, only a lunch with no direct cost. I love the CCCP!!!

  24. I think if stirred are open on thanksgiving and black Friday then the population that would originally shop only on Friday would shop on thursday but maybe not on Friday. This would lead to decreased sales on Friday but increased total sales.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think its an inefficent idea....the sales can wait a couple hours and start early black friday morning. Thanksgiving is the time to share meals with family and be thankful. People who have to work on Thanksgiving will not get this experience.

having a sale open one extra day is not going to creAte a ton more sales and will take away both the traditions of Thanksgiving and Black friday.

  26. I think that corporations such as Sears should open up on Thanksgiving, that is corporations that have been on the downslope and haven't made much revenue as of late. Companies that have been successful the past couple years should not be open on Thanksgiving because they should get a break for their hard work and get some time to spend with their families.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Whether or not it is a good idea, I am going to spend that time with family. After all, it's a holiday. People should spend less time shopping when there are "sales" and more time with their families.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think that the stores that have the sales will experience a good increase in revenue because of the sale. Even though a lot of people will be spending thanksgiving with their families, thanksgiving doesn't usually take all day so some people will go out and take advantage of the sales. I however will not be shopping on thanksgiving, I don't really like crowds.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I can't imagine many people would shop on Thanksgiving. Most people are with their families, celebrating the holiday. If the stores have huge sales, maybe people will be drawn from their families to capitalize on the sales. Nevertheless, I know my family members can wait one day, and shop on Black Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I dot think this is a good idea because it's ruining the tradtitiom of black Friday anyone will just be able to go to this sale whereas waiting in line at 3 am eliminates a large amount of people. Personally, i would definitely not go shopping on thanksgiving because it's a day to spend time with the family.

  31. Thanksgiving is for eating, a lot, not shopping. Black Friday is becoming earlier each year and it's now become black November. I don't think many more people will shop on thanksgiving if more stores are opened like sears, I know I won't be shopping on thanksgiving. Don't shop, eat, duh.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think black thanksgiving is a bad idea because people should be at home with their families and if they are not than they are weird. This could be bad for stores because if the don't get many customers although their fixed cost does not go up their variable cost will go up.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wohlners a complete ahole....I don't really care..if you're willing to spend thanksgiving at the store, go for it. It's smart for the businesses. As for me I would be too lazy anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Even if there are sales on Thanksgiving I still won't go shopping. I don't think it really matters that stores like sears are open on Thanksgiving because people are not forced to shop that day and can decide whether it's more important to get a good deal on something or spend time with family.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh my wohlner.....I love black Friday. Although it is stressful if you are striving for one certain sale item, I believe it to be fun. I hate being surrounded by so many people, but it's a fun day to shop with your friends at strange times and for good sales. It is also exciting to see what you can find and for how cheap you can get it for. Yayyy. One year my dad bought my cousin and i huge care bears and 2 brats spas. It was totally unnecessary but they were really cheap! good times. Black Friday is a tradition. Thanksgiving day should be more family oriented and families should not be out shopping for the hottest deals. Keep it the way it is. It's gettin outta control... Trrrrr

  36. Personally, I will not be attending this shopping event for i greatly dislike shopping. But I'm sure many people, mostly of the female gender, will be attending such event, and many firms will create great revenue which will exceed the marginal cost that they have to pay, and receive a fairly great profit

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'd rather be watching football or getting fat. I would never go shopping on one of the best holidays of the years. But if sears wants their sales to go up they should be open on thanksgiving although I'm sure the employees will be pretty mad.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think more people will shop on thanksgiving due to the increased demand for cheaper prices. Sure some people, will stay in and spend more time with the family, but I don't think most people will want to miss out on the opportunity. Plus people working there receive more money for working the holiday season shift. Either waxy, it's a win-win scenario.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Obviously there is demand for thanksgiving day shopping but I think that places like Sears and Kohls are just desperately trying to drum up more business by making a huge deal out of it. I myself wouldn't go shopping Thanksgving day but I'm sure there are people who will but I can't imagine there will be a substantial amount of people who will go out that day.

  40. Really, Sears? I know you have been bleeding money, but trying to make a quick buck on this classic American holiday is just low. It used to be no stores were open on Thanksgiving or Christmas, but now fast food restaurants and apparently department stores want to make money instead of celebrating with family and friends. Then again, there is demand for the product. I guess this just shows that the American people's values are shifting from family to saving time and money. I won't shop on Thanksgiving, though. I'll be too busy stuffing my face.

  41. Thanksgiving is just a day were we eat, nap and eat some more. It is not a day door shopping and I do not think many people will be shopping on the day of Thanksgiving, but rather the weekend coming up after. The stores that are open, need to have special sales to get people out of there homes and away from food. At least for me, the only way I would leave my house to go shopping on Thanksgiving is if there's a unique sale on something I need. Otherwise, I will just be eating/sleeping.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think it's stupid to have sales on thanksgiving because who would want to go shopping when they could be at home eating a delicious thanksgiving feast.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanksgiving is a holiday that some people get excited for because of the sales and the craziness of black Friday. I think stores opening on Thursday retrying to rush things and as they may get some customers in, Thursday is for family, eating, and football.

  44. I understand not all people celebrate all holidays, what immigrant would really want to celebrate the date that marks the beginning of the slaughter of countless native American lives after exploiting them for aid? Every year, I regret that my family celebrates this holiday and I personally do not respect that others want to celebrate their exploitation of my ancestors. I feel the idea of shopping would be a better use of time, supporting more American businesses than staying at home. I hope shopping rates do increase and hope myself I can go out shopping to better achieve allocative efficiency of my labor resource. I also do not think anyone who goes out shopping on black Friday/thanksgiving are necessarily poor. Many people I know who go shopping are upper-middle class, because regardless of class, it would be economically illogical for anyone to not go shopping during these sales because it helps achieve allocative efficiency of capital (cash, not the capital resource). One should not be ignorant or offensive enough to assume shopping on this day marks a person as poor. One of my close immigrant friends recently asked me if he could go with my family to the black Friday sales because his family doesn't want to, but he wants an opportunity to see one of the most culturally informative holiday experiences in America, better showing him what we as Americans are.

  45. It will be one of the only places open,p so it will still pull in a profit, making it worth it for them to stay open on thanksgiving.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I won't be doing any black thanksgiving or black Friday shopping because I have no money... However, it seems that stores have huge savings, and 200 dollars could go a long way. Having said that, I thnk that black thanksgiving is a great idea.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Im indifferent about the sears thx giving sale cuz i dont do black friday. I moght next year but idk.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Personally I would rather spend Thankgiving with my family than shopping for presents. I think that people who want to take advantage of black Friday sales and people who want to get their Christmas shopping done early will shop at sears on thanksgiving.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't ink people will go shopping too much on thanksgiving unless they don't have a family to spend the majority of the day with. Unless families decide to plan their family time earlier, they won't go to the mall (or at least mine won't).

    ReplyDelete
  50. It is worth for the company to be open on thanksgiving because it is besting their competition. however people who actually need the work should be shifted because some would rather spend time with their families. It is an interesting situation for the managerial staff

    ReplyDelete
  51. I will not be going to any stores for shopping because I don't like to shop. But if i was a shopper I would go to sears because it seems like they have great deals on thanksgiving and on black friday. I do think its also a gpod idea for the stores to make these changes.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Some people will be willing to shop, others will want to spend time with family. Its a good ploy for businesses that are losing money since they will be one of the few stores open, however if not enough people come to shop it will end up being an expense, perhaps they will keep certain stores closed next year based on regional sales on thanksgivig.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I don't shop on black Friday anyways so it docent matter. Why should it take one day in a year for stores to actually have reasonable prices? I don't understand what this "new black Friday" is and what makes it different from the old. If you really want to save money shop at walmart. People who shop at khols are stuck up upper middle class people who think they're too good for products essentially made the same, just sold at a less representable outlet.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Being open on thanksgiving will be a good business move because not everyone will be open and there will be less competition on thanksgiving which means that some shoppers will go to places like sears regardless if they want to or not

    ReplyDelete
  55. The new Black Froday procedure will allow the masses to be split up between Thursday and Friday. Stores will be able to create more sales and attract more customers. Additionally, there will be less crowds.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I don't think many people will participate in thanksgiving shopping unless there is one particular item on sale (like a laptop, etc). I think that thanksgiving shopping is pretty ridiculous, and it makes America look even more materialistic than it did before.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I think that there will be some who will go shopping on Thanksgiving, but I really don't think that stores should be open because Thanksgiving is a family holiday, and Black Friday is meant to be the shopping day. Also, I think that all workers should get a day off.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I will probably not be going to sears on thanksgiving because i will be with my family. However, im sure a pretty good amount of people will go on Thursday to try and avoid crowds on friday. The numbers won't be as high as Friday, but it will probably be worth it for companies to stay open for at least half the day on thanksgiving

    ReplyDelete
  59. Some people will be willing to go shopping on thanksgiving day, but it will mostly be those without family to spend it with. I feel it will be very inefficient because many people are going to rather spend the time eating and giving thanks for the time they have with their family.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I will probably not be going shopping on thanksgiving because using marginal analysis it is more worth it to stay home and eat then go to sears or other stores because I don't really like shopping in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think the sale at Sears will be a bit hit because they have such a variety of products from electronics, to clothing, to appliances - they could draw a pretty large crowd. As for Black Thanksgiving, I hope people resist the urge to waste money on luxury items and stay home with their families for Thanksgiving dinner...Seriously...Also, Cyber Monday became very popular last year so it'll probably be even more so this year, propelling less people to take part in Black Friday, and even less in Black Thanksgiving.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think that there will be a lot of people who will run to the stores as early as 3 am. Howerver, due to this, some people, like myself, will rather stay at home and sleep longer. Also, many people will rather go shopping on cyber monday, because it is very convenient.
