Has Santa Become a Techie?
Android is outselling the IPhone as a platform, but the IPhone is the single most popular model by a wide margin according to Nielsen Ratings. Computers were the most purchased tech gift, then tv's, smartphones (non-IPhone), IPad, Blu-Ray players, E-Readers, and Wii's. That was the top seven. It was a great holiday shopping season for retailers both online and the traditional "bricks and mortar" stores. UPS and FedEx were also pleased to see online sales up 13% from last year as well.
Duffka is interested in the readers gifts? How did the compare to the list below? How did the holidays this year compare to the holidays of the last couple of years for you?

I didn't get any tech gifts this year, but in years past I have. The info graphic doesn't surprise me, seeing as a lot of store were really pushing TVs and computers before the holidays.
ReplyDeleteSanta gave the world the best Christmas gift of all:the video of Miley Cyrus doing salvia.
Did not receive any of those gifts. The holiday this year was boring.
ReplyDeleteI received a smartphone as a gift which is in the list above. The holidays are not really different from years past because I usually get the presents that i ask for (efficient).
ReplyDeleteThis year I got a tv for Christmas, but my parents actually bought it on black friday. I didn't really need or want anything so that was all I got for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI did not get any tech gifts, but if I could pick one I would probably want a smart phone or a iPod touch. In the past I have gotten techie gifts but I didn't this year which is the only difference.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get any electronic gifts this year. I have in past years but i didn't really pay attention to what was selling and what was not. However my dad got the newest iPod touch. I am a little surprised that the iPhone didn't do to well and was beaten out by the android. I'm also surprised the ipad did well over the iphone and iPod touch.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the list has changed very much from the previous last few years, give or a take a few additions. I'll admit I get most for my birthday since it's 4 months before Christmas, but the same demand for gifts is still the same. I'm not surprised that android is outselling the iPhone at this point, either. Apple only has one phone product, minus FaceTime for the iTouch and such, whereas android has numerous diffent options to suit different users demands. Our generation is definitely becoming more technology oriented. Though, I think the only reason why is because we grew up just when technology was starting this "breakthrough" in advancement. As a side note, I'm glad to see E-readers up the, since everything else is for mindless brainwashing.
ReplyDeleteThis year, I didn't really want any big gifts. I had already received Kinect for my birthday, so I asked for a few non-electronic gifts. I plan on getting a laptop before college, and maybe a smartphone as well. Every year, it seems as though more and more younger children are receiving high-tech gifts lime phones and video games.
ReplyDeleteFor me it's reached a point that I feel bad making my parents buy me gifts, especially when I'm just making things up for them to buy because they demand a christmas list from me. So for me, it's mostly clothes and records, then any random gifts they think I would "like". Previous years, mainly my early teens, I would ask for videos games, and an xbox 360, gadgets and such. So I guess my tech splurging has decreased over the years for he holidays.
ReplyDeleteI think people's morale has gone up with the holidays compared to the previous years and consumers are buying bigger items because of the savings opportunities. Items that were being stretched a bit beyond their lifetime are becoming replaced. With all of the government stimulus on items like appliances, they've been flying off of the shelves.
ReplyDeleteIn my home too, this Christmas tree was a bit more full this year and I splurged on presents for my family this year.
I got nothing from the list above but my parents gave me a new camera and im really happy about it since previous years it was something less valuable to me and i really needed it since my previous one broke.
ReplyDeleteI didn't receive any of the gifts listed above but I know many people that have. Overall I would say for most people presents weren't that different from last year.
ReplyDeleteThe only electronic thing I got was a laptop for college from my parents. I also got clothes which is what I get most Christmases. I usually don't ask for electronic things but this year I did because didn't want to have to buy the laptop all by myself. I was also going to ask for a new phone but I didn't trust by parents to pick out a good one so I'm going to buy it myself.
ReplyDeleteI did not give or receive presents so I don't feel my opinion has much weight. However, my parents have bought themselves televisions over the last two years due to the drastic decreases in price.,
ReplyDeleteThe only tech thing i got was xbox kinect with 3 games. I got a lot of clothes which is expected. All those things are basic stuff any teenager wants, so it is unexpected
ReplyDeleteI didn't get any tech gifts, but then again I didn't want or need any. I guess those tech things are a lot more attractive to the younger consumers, because I'm really old haha...
ReplyDeleteI didn't get any tech gifts this year. I did, however, get Call of Duty: Black Ops, multiple gift cards to a wide variety of stores, some money, and a few other things. Seeing as how I really didn't ask for much this year, I'm content with what I received. Compared to other holidays, this one was definitely a success.
ReplyDeleteI received four of the gifts that were up on that list. I don't think much has changed in the past because there's always new technology coming out.
ReplyDeleteI did not get any tech gifts this year. But my family got a blue- Ray disk so that was the one tech gift. In past years, i still have not received tech gifts. There is nothing that i need or want.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get any tech gifts this year. My brother got an Xbox Kinect. This is the first Christmas that I didn't get a tech gift.
ReplyDeleteI did not receive any tech gifts this year. This year's holiday was the same as it has always been. Funny stories were told and that was basically it. Overall, the holidays were boring.
ReplyDeleteThe only tech related gift I got was a GPS.
ReplyDeleteJewish
ReplyDeleteI recieved a new smartphone, but that was the only technology gift I received. Other family members received tech gifts as well.
ReplyDeleteI did not receive any of those things, but I got the wii my freshmen year. And i have no siblings. I did get a car this break tho. It was nicee
ReplyDeleteI don't celebrate this holiday season but the holiday I did celebrate I got cash and I always do so I didn't receive any of the gifts on the list, but I am surprised that more ipads were purchased rather than the iPhone.
ReplyDeleteI got what I get every year. Socks. I also got a bathrobe, a fleece pullover, and a St. Louis Cardinals t shirt. I got no tech gifts. However my brother got a pair of huge new Xbox headphones with a microphone and a new Xbox controller.
ReplyDeleteI got a new computer for Christmas (because mine doesn't even do anything when I hit the power button), and my parents got a blu-ray player and ereader. I was very surprised though that television sets, global positioning systems, and accessories to any of these devices were not on this list.
ReplyDeleteMost of my gifts were video games so I guess I fit into the whole buying tech products for christmas thing. As quickly as technology is increasing in this time period people are always going to be wanting the newest product and the holidays are a great time to get them.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get any type of technological or electronic thing for Christmas. Instead I got funky socks, clothes, and money. I already have the technologies i want and even though they come out with new ones each year I don't think it's worth it to update mine every year.
ReplyDeleteThis year for Christmas I got a flat screen tv and ps3 mainly for college next year. In previous years I usually get about one new tech gift a year that takes up the majority of my presents.
ReplyDeletesanta has become a techie! this year many of my friends and teachers have bought or received lap tops. also, my whole family bought iphones but this was not really a santa thing, it was because our contracts ended. i think that most kids want to open a nintendo ds or wii games, notntoy cars or barbies anymore. when i went to the apple store and at and t store over break crowds were overwhelming with people who wanted help activating their gifts.
ReplyDeleteThis Christmas I did get a tech related gift. I do believe the holiday gifts are getting more and more pushed to be tech related.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get any of the top gifts this Christmas, though I already have a couple of the items above. If I want something, I'll usually just go out and get it, so there was nothing I really wanted for Christmas. Sure, a laptop and smartphone would be nice, but I can get those when I go to college.
ReplyDeleteI only got one gift which was on the list. I think not much has changed in gift giving, when there's new technology coming out people always want it and purchase it. No change
ReplyDeleteAlthough I didn't, get any of these technological presents this year, i do already have som of them like a tv, iPhone, etc. It was the first year that I didn't get anything like that because the past christmases I already received them and this year I just got clothes and smaller things.
ReplyDeleteI did not receive any of those gifts this year but I know one of my friends received the Xbox Kinect. However, I do plan on getting a lap top and new T.V. Before college.
ReplyDeleteI bought all my own gifts with money I received for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteThe gifts I got for Christmas were not on this list but they were gifts that would go with some of the products on the list I already have
ReplyDeleteI didn't get any tech gifts listed above but I got a lot of money and gift cards so it's good. I don't really get much tech stuff during the holidays I just do over the course of the year, I did get a new tv last Xmas though. But as tech becomes a more accepted trend, more tech gifts will be seen.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get any tech related gifts this year kinda because i already have some of those things on that list already..so yeah.
ReplyDeleteI did not receive any techie gifts for Xmas because I already have them. I'm not sure that techie gifts are good holiday presents because they are really expensive.
ReplyDeleteI did not receive any tech gifts this year and never have. I don't trust my parents to buy technology for me so I ask for money to get any technology I want.
ReplyDeleteI got one tech gift which was the new iPhone, I think they're great gifts obviously except they are really expensive,
ReplyDeleteThis year I got a MacBook pro and it's definitely the biggest gift I received and as the years go on the presents I typically get are more and more useful. Aka not toys.
ReplyDeleteI normally receive tech gifts like a phone but this year there was nothing I needed so I would have rather had money than more technology.
ReplyDeleteThis year i got a new temperpedik matress some shirts and a gift card. They dont compare to the list at all. In previouse years i usually get clothes and giftcards.
ReplyDeleteThis year I didn't receive any tech gifts. It is kind of surprising how many people didn't receive any considering this graph shows so many being sold. I think within the next few years a lot more tech gifts will be sold than the already chart topping numbers
ReplyDeleteI got a new xbox but only because my old one broke. I think tech gifts are a lot more popular because of how quickly they improve. It didn't really compare to past Christmases because It wasn't a surprise.
ReplyDeleteIn the past few years I have received most of the items on this list. This past Christmas I got cash because most gift ideas have already been taken care of
ReplyDeletePersonally I received a snowboard, books, and clothes, however my younger brother received a new nook. My personal list did not match the list at all however his nook is on the list as an e-reader. This pretty much lines up for most of my Christmases in the past minus the new snowboard. Occasionally I get a techie thing but usually just one as they're more expensive.
ReplyDeleteThis is year I got money. I proceeded to buy a couple of sick NFL jerseys so I could match Blake Potash. The only other things I got were a couple of video games. Compared to years in the past, my Mom was more price sensitive me and brothers gifts.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get anything technological this year but last year I got two gifts so I don't know what this says about the markets in two years
ReplyDeleteThe only electronic gift I got was a little tv for my room and later, my dorm room. I will probably want a better laptop when I leave for college and I would be willing to pay more for a computer that will last me all the way through college thAn save money on a lower quality computer. All of my other Christmas gift ewer not technology related.
ReplyDeleteI just got one tech gift this year worth about 60 dollars. I used to get more electronics because it's really the only thing I ever want, but now electronics are very expensive (other than tv's) and some people can't afford 200 dollar phones AND 400 dollar iPods AND 800 dollar tv's.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get any tech gifts this Christmas but I didn't really ask for anything so i wasn't disappointed. The best gift I got was money so I could spend it on whatever I wanted and got exactly what I needed. I think this is the most efficient way and this is the best way to receive gifts for me. O and btw i didn't buy any tech stuff with that money
ReplyDeleteStores realize that the new thing is technology, it has become a huge part of our society and they realize that the deeper they dip their fingers into the tech market the more money they'll make. Many electronics are cheap to make and have high profit margins and as the tech craze goes on, firms know that there is going to be huge demand for the next big thing. As for me, I have been getting tech gifts my whole life, so I am used to the buildup and demand for new electronics.
ReplyDeleteI don't get Christmas gifts anymore but if I did it would be electronic since electronic gifts are universally applicable to any age bracket. Our generation has the most experience with these devices since we usually pilot the new devices companies release.
ReplyDeleteI usually don't receive techie gifts for Christmas, but this year I got a Canon DSLR camera.
ReplyDeleteI got clothes and other usable things firm my parents. My extended family gave me money and gift cards. Overall, the things that I got this Christmas were to me, worth what people paid for them. Yay!
ReplyDeleteThis year I didn't receive any electronics although most of my friends did. I usually did get a ipod or a laptop or a camera but this year, with the cost of college, I decided not to ask for anything big. I will be asking for a laptop soon as a graduation gift. Most people are finding these smart phones and laptops to be a necessity instead of a luxury and I think thats why kids have been asking for them too.
ReplyDeleteNo electronic gifts for me this Christmas. Simply clothes and chocolates, and an envelope or two with money. In the recent past I've gotten a guitar and a new saxophone since I'm more of a musician than a 'gamer' or techie or what not. I'm satisfied with the gifts I receive. If i don't need anything, I don't ask for anything, and I get gifts like this year. I don't mind at all.
ReplyDeleteIve gotten fewer gifts every year but they've also gotten more expensive. I got a lot of clothes, video games, gift cards and chocolate. I really enjoy getting electronic devices and hate getting clothes. I'm guessing that the recession is directly connected to the purchasing of expensive, electronic goods.
